Gauri murti and a Telugu devotee offering atlu in a courtyard for Atla Tadde on 28 October 2026

Atla Tadde 2026: 28 October Date, Puja & Atlu Vrat Guide

Atla Tadde 2026 falls on Wednesday, 28 October. Also called Atla Taddi, this Telugu observance brings together Gauri worship, moonrise prayers and the familiar aroma of freshly prepared atlu. Across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, its warmth comes as much from mothers, daughters and neighbours gathering together as from the formal vratam.

If you are preparing the puja for the first time, begin with your family's practice rather than an intimidating shopping list. This guide explains the date, the meaning of the observance and a manageable home sequence. It describes traditions, not promises that fasting or buying a particular item will secure a marriage, health or prosperity.

⏰ Atla Tadde: Wednesday, 28 October 2026. Reference timings below are for New Delhi, India, IST (UTC+05:30), with the tithi ending after midnight on 29 October. Moonrise and local Panchang timings may vary; use your own city's calendar.

Atla Tadde 2026 date, tithi and moonrise

Drik Panchang and the Hyderabad-based Srinivas Panchang both list 28 October. In the Telugu Amanta calendar this is Ashwayuja Krishna Tadiya, or Tritiya. A Purnimanta calendar calls the same waning fortnight Kartik: the different month name does not create a second festival.

Reference Date or time What it means
Atla Tadde observance Wednesday, 28 October 2026 Telugu Gauri vratam on Krishna Tritiya
Tritiya begins — New Delhi IST 4:06 AM, 28 October Drik Panchang tithi boundary
Tritiya ends — New Delhi IST 1:06 AM, 29 October After midnight, not 1:06 AM on the festival morning
Moonrise — New Delhi IST 7:16 PM, 28 October Delhi reference only; not a Hyderabad or all-India time
Telugu month Ashwayuja, Amanta The same date is Kartik in Purnimanta usage

Sanatan Bhumi's explicitly labelled New Delhi IST calculation agrees on the 7:16 PM moonrise, while placing the tithi boundaries one minute later, at 4:07 AM and 1:07 AM respectively. That small calculation difference is disclosed rather than hidden. Moonrise is not a guarantee that the moon will be visible through clouds or buildings, and the tithi window is not an instruction to fast until 1 AM.

What Atla Tadde celebrates

Gauri, a form of Parvati, is at the devotional heart of the vrata. Women traditionally pray for their family's wellbeing and harmony; unmarried participants may pray for a caring future partner. These are expressions of faith, not guaranteed outcomes or a measure of anyone's worth.

The Gauri story and the household tradition

One popular account, described by HinduPad, says Narada advised Gauri to undertake this vow in her devotion to Shiva. Treat it as a regional devotional telling: family katha versions differ, and this guide does not assign it an unverified scripture chapter. Hear the version preserved by your elders without blending it with an unrelated vrat story.

The name recalls atlu, commonly small dosa-like offerings in Telugu households, and tadiya, the third lunar day. Gorintaku, or henna, swings and songs also belong to the festival's cultural life. Participation need not become a performance: a quiet prayer and a shared meal can be meaningful when work, travel or caregiving limits a larger gathering.

Is Atla Tadde the same as Karwa Chauth?

They share themes of family prayers and moonrise observance but remain distinct traditions. Atla Tadde is the Telugu Tritiya vratam; Karwa Chauth is associated with Chaturthi. Do not automatically import every sieve ritual, food rule or northern custom into a Telugu home. Our Karwa Chauth 2026 date and family puja guide explains that separate observance.

Atla Tadde puja samagri

  • A familiar Gauri or Parvati image, clean cloth and a stable worship surface.
  • Flowers, turmeric and kumkum, according to household practice.
  • Clean water, a small vessel and a plate for offerings.
  • A diya, cotton wick and the lamp fuel your family uses.
  • Ingredients for your customary atlu, plus fruit or other family naivedyam.
  • The household katha and, where customary, a vrata thread and items for sharing.

Puja ghee for the supervised diya is an option where a ghee lamp is customary. Mauli for general puja use can be useful, but it is not automatically a substitute for a specific knotted thread prescribed by your family. Ask before substituting.

📖 Keep Gauri's puja plate simple and ready

If kumkum is part of your household's Gauri worship, Sanatana Journey's 30g Roli (Kumkum) provides a practical tilak offering for the puja plate. Its current listed price is ₹45. Use it for the ritual purpose described on the product page; it is not food. This is physical samagri, not an Atla Tadde katha guide, and delivery availability should be checked before ordering for a particular day.

A simple Atla Tadde home observance

1. Prepare together before the festival

Confirm the local moonrise, the family katha and the food preparation with an elder. Arrange flowers and utensils in advance. Where gorintaku is customary, it can be part of the previous evening's gathering. Keep the plan comfortable for the people actually taking part.

2. Begin the day with a realistic sankalpa

Bathe, wear clean clothes and offer a sincere intention to Gauri. Some households take a pre-dawn meal before their fast. Agree beforehand on the form of observance you can safely follow; do not turn somebody else's strict vow into an obligation for everyone.

3. Prepare the evening naivedyam

Make the atlu your family recognises. Rice-and-black-gram pancakes are described in Telugu community accounts; recipes and offering counts vary. Ask an elder about any prescribed number rather than treating an internet list as universal. Keep cooking ingredients separate from ritual powders and use clean serving utensils.

4. Worship Gauri and offer moonrise prayers

Arrange the image, water, flowers and offerings, light a small supervised lamp and offer your familiar Gauri prayers. Read or hear the family katha. Rushipeetham's description of the observance places Gauri worship, arghya to the moon and prasadam together; follow your household's order. Use a safe balcony or courtyard, not a roof edge or road, to look for the moon.

5. Share prasadam and complete gently

Where customary, share atlu as vayanam with an elder or other women, then complete the fast according to your tradition. Thank the people who cooked and helped. Extinguish the lamp safely before leaving the room or sleeping; an unattended overnight flame is not a requirement.

Fasting rules, temple visits and regional differences

A strict waterless fast exists in some traditions, but this article does not prescribe it. Do not postpone prescribed medicines or necessary meals because of a blog. Anyone considering a demanding fast should seek appropriate personal medical advice; children need not imitate adult austerities. Family prayer can remain inclusive of those not fasting.

Gauri worship also appears in other festivals. Our Mangala Gauri guide to the separate Sawan Tuesday vrata helps distinguish the names. Likewise, the Kartik Maas calendar and daily worship guide explains why North Indian month labels differ.

For regional Devi devotion, Kanaka Durga Temple in Vijayawada is a well-known destination. That does not establish a special Atla Tadde programme there: check the temple's current notice before travelling. This is principally a home-observance guide, not a verified temple-event listing.

Frequently asked questions

When is Atla Tadde in 2026?
Wednesday, 28 October. It is Ashwayuja Krishna Tritiya in the Telugu Amanta calendar.

What time is moonrise?
The verified New Delhi reference is 7:16 PM IST on 28 October. Check a city-specific Panchang for Hyderabad, Vijayawada or any other location.

Are atlu compulsory in one exact number?
Atlu are the characteristic offering, but recipes, counts and sharing customs vary. Follow your family's practice instead of assuming one number applies everywhere.

Can I worship without a nirjala fast?
Discuss a suitable observance with your family or priest. Do not compromise necessary food, water or prescribed treatment to match a general online guide.

Is this the Sawan Mangala Gauri vrat?
No. They both honour Gauri but belong to different calendar observances and have their own household methods.

Let preparation support the prayer

Keep the evening unhurried: know your local moonrise, prepare a modest offering and make room for the people sharing the vrata. If you need it for your puja plate, view the 30g Roli (Kumkum), currently ₹45. Buying is optional; the intention is a thoughtful, safe and affectionate observance.
