Why two dates? The udaya tithi rule explained

Hindu vrats are fixed by the udaya tithi — the tithi present at sunrise. Tritiya begins at 07:08 AM on 13 September, which is after sunrise that day. So the 13th does not qualify. Tritiya then runs all night and ends at 07:06 AM on the 14th — just after sunrise. So 14 September carries the udaya tithi, and that is the printed date on Drik Panchang and most published calendars.

Families who keep it on the 13th are following a different, equally old convention: they perform the main puja in pradosh kaal, the twilight hour after sunset, when Tritiya is fully running. Both practices are valid. The rule is simple — follow your family tradition, and do not switch dates midway through a vrat you have already begun.

Hartalika Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi on the same day

Because Tritiya ends barely an hour after sunrise on 14 September, Chaturthi occupies almost the whole of that day — and Ganesh Chaturthi is fixed by Madhyahna (midday) Chaturthi. The Story Behind Hartalika Teej

The name itself tells the story. Harat means to carry away; aalika means a female friend. Hartalika is the festival of the friend who carried Parvati away.

Parvati, daughter of Himavan, had set her heart on Shiva. She left the palace and stood in penance on the banks of the Ganga — through summer heat, through winter frost, through the rains — living first on leaves and then on nothing at all. Narada Muni arrived at Himavan's court with a proposal from Vishnu, and her father, seeing his daughter waste away, accepted it gladly.

When Parvati learned of it she wept. Her closest sakhi did not counsel patience — she acted. She took Parvati into a dense forest cave where no one would find her. There, on the Tritiya of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha, under Hasta Nakshatra, Parvati shaped a Shivalinga out of river sand with her own hands, and worshipped it through the whole day and the whole night without food or water.

Shiva appeared before dawn. He accepted her as his own, and granted a boon: any woman who keeps this vrat with the same sincerity will receive a marriage of love and long life. Himavan, seeing the will of the gods, gave his blessing. This is why the vrat is kept nirjala — because Parvati kept it nirjala. And it is why the sand Shivalinga, not a metal idol, is the traditional object of worship.

Hartalika Teej Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

1. Sankalp the night before. On the evening of 13 September, take a light satvik meal before sunset (the sargi tradition in some homes) and resolve to keep the vrat. Nothing after that — not even water.
2. Snan and shringar. Rise before dawn on 14 September, bathe, and dress as a bride. Green saree, green bangles, mehendi, bindi, kajal and full solah shringar are traditional — Parvati is worshipped as a suhagan.
3. Make the murtis. Shape Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha from clean river sand or black clay. Place them on a wooden chowki over a red or green cloth, facing east or north-east.
4. Kalash sthapana. Fill a copper kalash with water and a little Gangajal, place mango leaves and a coconut on top, and set it to the right of the murtis.
5. Shodashopachar puja. Offer roli, akshat, chandan, haldi, flowers, dhoop and a ghee diya. Bilva patra and dhatura to Shiva; sindoor, mehendi, bangles, comb and the sixteen shringar items to Parvati.
