Vat Savitri and Vat Purnima: What Is the Difference?

The vrat has the same Savitri-Satyavan story and spiritual purpose, but the date differs because regional calendars follow different traditions. North Indian communities commonly observe Vat Savitri on Jyeshtha Amavasya. Maharashtra, Gujarat and several southern communities commonly observe Vat Purnima on Jyeshtha Purnima, about fifteen days later.

3. Begin the puja: Invoke Ganesha and offer water, roli, akshat, flowers, diya and incense according to your family tradition.
4. Worship the Vat tree: Offer water at the roots and apply roli or kumkum respectfully. Avoid nails, staples or anything that can damage the tree.
5. Tie the mauli: Walk around the tree while gently winding the thread. The number of parikramas varies by regional and family custom.
6. Read or hear the katha: Listen to the story of Savitri and Satyavan with attention.
7. Offer aarti and prasad: Complete the puja with prayer, aarti and charity or food donation if possible.
8. Complete the vrat: Break the fast according to your family tradition and local Panchang guidance.
