Karwa Chauth Vrat Vidhi — Step by Step

The Night Before: Sargi

Before sunrise, the mother-in-law prepares a Sargi thali for her daughter-in-law. Dry fruits are the heart of that thali — a Vratam Dry Fruit Falhari Mixture (₹360) is an easy way to put it together — because it has to carry her through the whole day. After eating Sargi, no food or water is consumed until the moon is sighted that night.

Step 1: Morning Sankalp

Wake before sunrise, take a bath, and wear festive clothes — traditionally red or pink. Apply sindoor and take a sankalp for your husband's long life.

Step 2: The Daylong Fast

Observe a complete nirjala (waterless) fast throughout the day. No food, no water until after moon darshan.

Step 3: Evening Puja

In the evening, set up the puja thali with the Karwa pot filled with water, diya, roli, akshat, and prasad. A picture of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva is placed for worship.

Step 4: Listen to the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha

The complete Karwa Chauth Katha must be heard or read during the evening puja.

Step 5: The Moon Darshan Ritual

  1. Look at the moon through a chalni (sieve)
  2. Then look at your husband's face through the same sieve
  3. Offer arghya — water from the Karwa — to the moon
  4. Your husband offers water to you and you break your fast

Step 6: Break the Fast

After moon darshan, your husband offers you water and sweets. Enjoy the prasad with the family.

The Karwa Chauth Katha — Story of Veervati

Once there was a woman named Veervati who observed Karwa Chauth for the first time after her marriage. Her brothers tricked her into thinking the moon had risen by creating a false reflection. She broke her fast prematurely and her husband fell gravely ill. Veervati fasted sincerely on every Karwa Chauth after, and her devotion moved the goddess, who restored her husband's health and granted them a long, happy life. The moral: the power of this vrat lies in sincere, unbroken devotion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a newly married woman observe Karwa Chauth?

Yes — the first Karwa Chauth after marriage is considered the most auspicious. The mother-in-law sends a Sargi thali for the new daughter-in-law.

Is Karwa Chauth only for married women?

Traditionally yes. Some unmarried women also observe it for a good life partner, though the primary tradition is for married women.

What if I cannot do a nirjala fast for health reasons?

Many women observe a phalahar (fruit-only) fast instead. The intention and devotion matter most. Consult your doctor if needed.

Can I observe Karwa Chauth if my husband is abroad?

Yes. Many women fast even when their husbands are in another country. The vrat is about devotion — physical proximity is not required.
