Hariyali Teej 2026: When Devotion Turns the Colour of Monsoon Green

As Sawan reaches its final, lush weeks, the fields turn emerald, the swings return to the banyan trees, and married women across North India begin preparing for one of the most beloved vrats of the year — Hariyali Teej. This year carries a rare double significance: Teej falls on the very same day as India's Independence Day, giving the festival an extra note of celebration in 2026.

Hariyali Teej is not just a fast — it is a living retelling of Goddess Parvati's unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva, and a day when women renew their prayers for the health, longevity, and happiness of the men they love. If you are observing the vrat this year, here is everything you need to know — the exact date and muhurat, the story behind the fast, the puja vidhi, fasting rules, and the samagri to keep ready.

Hariyali Teej 2026: Date & Timings

⏰ Hariyali Teej 2026 falls on Saturday, 15 August — the same day as Independence Day.
Event Date & Time
Shravana Shukla Tritiya begins 6:46 PM, 14 August 2026

Because the tithi spans both evenings, most households follow local panchang guidance and keep the vrat and main puja on 15 August, when the tithi is prevailing through most of the daylight hours.

The Story Behind the Vrat: Parvati's 108 Births

Every Teej katha begins the same way — with Lord Shiva himself narrating the story to Parvati on Mount Kailash, reminding her of her own journey to become his wife. According to the katha, Devi Parvati took 107 births, each one spent in devotion and longing, before finally winning Shiva as her husband in her 108th birth, born as the daughter of King Himavan.

In that final life, young Parvati left the comforts of her father's palace and retreated into the forest to perform tapasya of extraordinary intensity — surviving on dry bel leaves, then on air alone, standing through storms and scorching heat without wavering in her resolve. Moved by her penance, Lord Shiva accepted her as his consort on the Shukla Tritiya of Shravan — the very tithi that Hariyali Teej commemorates today.

This is why Hariyali Teej is celebrated as a festival of unshakeable devotion. Married women observe the fast praying for their husband's long life and their marriage's wellbeing, while unmarried girls keep the vrat hoping to be blessed with a husband as devoted and worthy as Shiva.

Why "Hariyali" — The Festival of Green

Hariyali means greenery, and this Teej arrives at the peak of the monsoon, when the earth is at its most abundant. The colour green is everywhere in the celebration — women wear green bangles and green or red bridal-style attire, apply fresh mehendi, and tie swings (jhoola) on banyan and neem trees to sing traditional Kajari and Teej folk songs with friends and family. The 16 adornments of a bride, known as Solah Shringar, are worn in full — sindoor, bangles, bindi, anklets, and mehendi — as an offering of feminine devotion to Goddess Parvati.

Hariyali Teej Puja Vidhi

The puja is traditionally performed in the evening, after idols or images of Shiva-Parvati (often accompanied by Lord Ganesha) are installed and decorated.

  1. Clean the puja area and place a small platform or chowki draped in a red or green cloth.
  2. Install idols or pictures of Shiva, Parvati, and Ganesha together.
  3. Offer akshat, roli, chandan, flowers, durva grass, and bel patra to the deities.
  4. Adorn Goddess Parvati with a full set of Solah Shringar items — bangles, sindoor, bindi, and a new saree or chunni if possible.
  5. Offer milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sweets such as ghevar or seasonal mithai as bhog.
  6. Light a diya and incense, and perform aarti with the whole family.
  7. Recite or listen to the Teej vrat katha before breaking or continuing the fast the next day.
  8. Married women traditionally seek blessings from elders and exchange sindoor, bangles, and sweets with other women (a ritual called sindhara).

Fasting Rules

Fast Type What It Involves
Nirjala Vrat The traditional, strictest form — completely without food or water from sunrise until the puja and katha are complete.
Phalahar Vrat A gentler alternative — fruits, milk, and water are permitted through the day for those unable to keep a waterless fast.

Whichever form you observe, the fast is broken only after the evening puja and katha, traditionally with prasad shared among family and friends. If you have a health condition that makes a nirjala vrat unsafe, most priests and family elders agree that sincere devotion through a phalahar vrat carries the same blessings — the intention matters more than the austerity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hariyali Teej only for married women?
No. While married women observe it primarily for their husband's long life and marital harmony, unmarried girls also keep the vrat, praying to Goddess Parvati for a devoted and suitable life partner, following the same tradition of tapasya she is remembered for.

What is the difference between Hariyali Teej and Hartalika Teej?
Hariyali Teej falls on Shravana Shukla Tritiya, while Hartalika Teej is observed about two weeks later, on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, just before Ganesh Chaturthi. Both honour Parvati's devotion to Shiva, but they belong to different tithis and regional traditions.

Can I keep the vrat without a nirjala fast?
Yes. A phalahar (fruit-based) vrat is widely accepted, especially for pregnant women, the elderly, or anyone with a medical condition. Devotion and sincerity matter more than the strictness of the fast.

Why do women wear green on Hariyali Teej?
Green symbolises the lush monsoon season and new life, and is considered auspicious for marital happiness. Green bangles in particular are worn as a symbol of prosperity and a thriving married life.

What should be offered to Goddess Parvati on this day?
Solah Shringar items (sindoor, bangles, bindi, mehendi), along with flowers, durva grass, bel patra, milk, curd, honey, and sweets like ghevar are the traditional offerings.

When should the fast be broken?
Traditionally after the evening puja and the recitation of the Teej vrat katha, with family prasad marking the end of the fast.

A Devotion Worth Preparing For

Hariyali Teej is one of those festivals where the ritual itself becomes the prayer — every bangle, every diya, every note of a Kajari song sung on a jhoola is an offering of the same devotion Parvati once carried through 108 lifetimes. However you choose to observe it this year, may your Teej be full of green fields, glowing diyas, and the blessings of Shiva-Parvati on your home.

🌿 Prepare the traditional Solah Shringar offering

Hariyali Teej honours Goddess Parvati, and Solah Shringar is one of the traditional offerings described above. The puja-sized set is made for adorning a Mata Rani idol.
