Rishi Panchami 2026: 15 September Date, Saptarishi Puja Vidhi, Vrat Katha & Fasting Rules

Every year, the day after the whole country falls in love with Ganpati Bappa, a much quieter vrat arrives — one that almost no one advertises, but which women in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Nepal and South India have kept faithfully for centuries. It is called Rishi Panchami, and it is not a festival at all. It is an apology.

Rishi Panchami is the day we turn to the Sapta Rishi — the seven sages who gave Sanatana Dharma its knowledge, its lineages and its very idea of right living — and say two things: thank you, and forgive me for what I did without knowing. In a calendar full of festivals asking for wealth, children and long life, this one asks for nothing except cleanliness of conscience.

In 2026 it falls at a remarkable moment. Hartalika Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi both land on 14 September — and Rishi Panchami follows the very next morning. Three vrats inside forty-eight hours. Here is everything you need to observe the last of them properly.

Rishi Panchami 2026: Date and Timings

⏰ Rishi Panchami 2026 falls on Tuesday, 15 September 2026. The Saptarishi puja muhurat is 11:07 AM to 01:33 PM IST — a window of 2 hours 26 minutes.
Detail Timing (IST)
Rishi Panchami 2026 Tuesday, 15 September 2026
Tithi Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami
Panchami Tithi begins 15 September, 07:44 AM
Panchami Tithi ends 16 September, 08:59 AM
Saptarishi Puja Muhurat 11:07 AM – 01:33 PM
Muhurat duration 2 hours 26 minutes
Ganesh Chaturthi (day before) Monday, 14 September 2026

Is there any confusion about the date this year?

No — and that is a relief, because both Hartalika Teej and Janmashtami caused genuine confusion this season. Rishi Panchami puja is a madhyahna (midday) ritual, not a sunrise one. Panchami tithi begins at 07:44 AM on 15 September and runs well past noon, so the midday muhurat falls cleanly inside the tithi. Every panchang agrees: 15 September 2026, Tuesday. Observe it with confidence.

Who Are the Sapta Rishi?

The Saptarishi are the seven mind-born sages through whom the Vedas were received and transmitted. They are the source of the gotra system — which means almost every Hindu family alive today traces its lineage back to one of these seven names. When you state your gotra at a wedding, a shraddha or a sankalp, you are naming your ancestor from this list:

  • Kashyapa — progenitor of devas, asuras, nagas and much of creation itself
  • Atri — father of Dattatreya, husband of the peerless Anasuya
  • Bharadvaja — sage of Ayurveda and of aeronautical wisdom in tradition
  • Vishvamitra — the king who became a Brahmarishi through sheer tapasya, and gave us the Gayatri Mantra
  • Gautama — sage of Nyaya, husband of Ahalya
  • Jamadagni — father of Parashurama
  • Vasishtha — guru of the Ikshvaku dynasty and of Shri Rama himself

The traditional arghya mantra names all seven in a single breath:

कश्यपोऽत्रिर्भरद्वाजो विश्वामित्रोऽथ गौतमः।
जमदग्निर्वसिष्ठश्च सप्तैते ऋषयः स्मृताः॥
दहन्तु पापं मे सर्वं गृह्णन्त्वर्घ्यं नमो नमः॥

"Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vishvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vasishtha — these seven are remembered as the Rishis. May they burn away all my faults; may they accept this arghya. Salutations, again and again."

The Rishi Panchami Vrat Katha

In the land of Vidarbha there lived a righteous brahmana named Uttank with his devoted wife Sushila. They had a son and a daughter. When the daughter came of age they married her into a family of equal standing — but fate was unkind, and within a short time she was widowed. Grief-stricken, the family left the village and built a small hut on the bank of the Ganga.

One day the daughter lay sleeping, and when she woke her body was covered in worms. Terrified, she ran to her mother. Sushila took the matter to her husband: "My daughter is virtuous. Why has this happened to her?"

Uttank entered deep samadhi and saw the cause. In her previous birth too she had been born a brahmani. As a young woman she had touched the household vessels during her monthly days, and — seeing others around her do the same — she had never once observed the vrat of Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami, the Rishi Panchami vrat, which exists precisely to wash away such unknowing lapses. The fault had followed her across a lifetime.

"But it is not beyond repair," her father said. "Let her observe Rishi Panchami now, with a clean heart and full vidhi, and every sorrow will leave her."

The daughter did exactly that. By the power of the vrat she was freed of her suffering, and in her next birth she received lasting good fortune and untroubled happiness.

What the katha is really teaching. Read plainly, this is a story about menstrual rules — and many families today, quite rightly, no longer keep those rules the way their grandmothers did. But the deeper instruction survives intact: we all commit errors we are not even aware of. Carelessness, a rule broken in ignorance, a duty skipped because everyone else was skipping it. Rishi Panchami is the day Sanatana Dharma hands you a formal way to acknowledge that, without shame, and set it down. That is why it is called a vrat of purification rather than a vrat of desire.

Rishi Panchami Puja Vidhi: Step by Step

1. The morning bath

Rise before sunrise. Traditionally, women brush their teeth with a datun of the apamarga (chirchita) plant, then bathe using earth, cow dung, amla and tulsi leaves — 108 times in the strictest observance, symbolically today. Add a few drops of Gangajal to your bathing water; the shastras say a dip in the Ganga on this day removes accumulated fault, and for those who cannot travel, this is the accepted substitute.

2. Prepare the puja sthaan

Clean the house and the mandir. Spread a red or yellow cloth on a wooden chowki. With haldi, kumkum and roli, draw a square mandala on a clean patch of floor or on the chowki.

3. Install the Saptarishi

Place a picture or symbolic representation of the seven sages on the mandala. Many families place seven small betel nuts or seven kusha grass bundles to represent them. If you keep a photograph of your own guru, it may be placed alongside.

4. Snan and abhishek

Offer pure water, then panchamrit — milk, curd, honey, sugar and ghee — over the representation. Wipe clean with fresh water.

5. Shodashopachara

Apply chandan tilak, offer akshat, flowers and a garland, light a ghee diya and dhoop, and offer seasonal fruit and panchmeva as naivedya.

6. Arghya and mantra

Recite the Saptarishi mantra given above and offer arghya during the midday muhurat, 11:07 AM to 1:33 PM.

7. Katha, aarti and kshama-prarthana

Read the vrat katha aloud, perform the aarti, and — the heart of this vrat — sincerely ask forgiveness for every fault committed knowingly or unknowingly through the year.

8. Prasad and blessings

Distribute prasad to the family. Feed a brahmana or make a donation if you can. It is customary to touch the feet of the elders of the house before eating.

Rishi Panchami Fasting Rules

The fasting rules of Rishi Panchami are unlike any other vrat, and this is what most guides get wrong. The restriction is not simply about eating less — it is about where the food came from.

Rule What it means
No hal-produced grain Nothing grown on land ploughed by bullocks — the vrat honours the sages, and the ox's labour is considered a debt not to be consumed today
What is eaten instead Sama ke chawal (moraiyo), singhare or kuttu atta, fruits, milk, curd, ghee, root vegetables
Salt Many families avoid regular salt entirely; sendha namak is used where salt is taken
Onion & garlic Strictly avoided
Number of meals Usually one sattvik meal after the midday puja
Who observes Traditionally married and unmarried women; men and elders may observe it as a vrat of atonement too
Parana After completing puja, katha and aarti within the muhurat

If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or on medication, take a phalahar vrat instead. Every dharma shastra permits substitution for health — the sages are honoured by sincerity, not by suffering.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Rishi Panchami in 2026?
Tuesday, 15 September 2026. The Saptarishi puja muhurat is 11:07 AM to 1:33 PM IST.

Is Rishi Panchami always the day after Ganesh Chaturthi?
Yes. Ganesh Chaturthi is Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi and Rishi Panchami is Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami — the very next tithi. In 2026 that means 14 September and 15 September respectively.

Can unmarried girls keep the Rishi Panchami vrat?
Yes. Unlike Teej or Karwa Chauth, this vrat is not tied to marital status. It is a vrat of purification, and any woman who has begun menstruating may observe it. Men and elders in some families keep it as a general vrat of atonement.

Why can't we eat normal rice or wheat on this day?
Because the vrat forbids grain grown on bullock-ploughed land. Sama ke chawal, singhare ka atta and kuttu ka atta are used instead, since they are traditionally regarded as growing without that labour.

What if I cannot fast for health reasons?
Observe a phalahar vrat with fruit and milk, complete the puja, katha and aarti properly, and the vrat is considered fulfilled. Sincerity is the requirement, not hardship.

Do I need an idol of the Saptarishi?
No. A printed image is perfectly acceptable, and most families use seven supari or seven kusha grass bundles arranged on the haldi-kumkum mandala to represent the seven sages.

What should I ask for on Rishi Panchami?
Traditionally, nothing material. The sankalp is for kshama — forgiveness for faults committed knowingly and unknowingly — and for the buddhi to live more carefully in the year ahead.

A Vrat Worth Keeping

Ganesh Chaturthi arrives with dhol and colour. Rishi Panchami arrives the next morning with a bucket of water, a square of haldi on the floor, and seven names spoken quietly. It asks for nothing, promises nothing, and yet the tradition has held onto it for well over a thousand years — because a dharma that only ever asks for boons eventually forgets how to say sorry.

This 15 September, take those two and a half hours. Draw the mandala. Speak the seven names. Ask for what the sages actually give: a clean conscience and a steadier mind.
