Masik Durgashtami 2026: Date, Puja Vidhi, Vrat Rules & Significance

Every month, on the eighth day of the waxing moon, the Mother comes close. Masik Durgashtami is the monthly Ashtami vrat dedicated to Maa Durga — a single day set aside to invoke Her shakti, clear away accumulated negativity, and place your family under Her protection. It is Navratri's Mahashtami in miniature, available to you twelve times a year instead of once.

This month, Masik Durgashtami falls on Thursday, 20 August 2026 — the Shukla Ashtami of Shravana maas, in the final stretch of the sacred Sawan month. Observing Ashtami while Shravan is still running is considered especially fruitful, because the whole month already carries a heightened spiritual charge.

⏰ Masik Durgashtami Vrat: Thursday, 20 August 2026. Ashtami Tithi begins 7:19 PM on 19 August and ends 9:18 PM on 20 August (IST).

Masik Durgashtami 2026 — Date & Timings

Because tithis are measured from moonrise-to-moonrise rather than midnight-to-midnight, the Ashtami tithi always spans two English calendar dates. The vrat is observed on the day when Ashtami is present at sunrise and through the main puja hours — which this month is Thursday, 20 August.

Detail Timing (IST)
Vrat Day Thursday, 20 August 2026
Tithi Shravana, Shukla Paksha Ashtami
Ashtami Begins 7:19 PM, 19 August 2026
Ashtami Ends 9:18 PM, 20 August 2026
Best Puja Window Brahma Muhurat (approx. 4:30–5:30 AM) or Sandhya Kaal (dusk)
Next Masik Durgashtami Friday, 18 September 2026 (Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami)

Note: timings are calculated for New Delhi. If you live outside India, please adjust to your local sunrise — devotees in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia should follow their own city's panchang for the tithi window.

Why Ashtami Belongs to Maa Durga

The Devi Mahatmya tells us that when Mahishasura's tyranny made the devas powerless, the combined tejas of all the gods took form as a single luminous woman — Durga, the one who is difficult to reach, difficult to defeat, difficult to comprehend. She fought the buffalo-demon for nine nights, and on the eighth night the battle reached its fiercest pitch. That is why Ashtami, above every other tithi, is remembered as the tithi of Her raw, protective power.

Shakta tradition holds that on Ashtami the Goddess manifests in Her Mahagauri and Chandika aspects — radiantly compassionate to Her devotees, terrifying to whatever obstructs them. It is also the tithi on which the eight Matrikas and the sixty-four Yoginis are said to be most accessible.

Devotees observe this monthly vrat for four broad reasons:

  • Protection — from illness, accident, enemies, and unseen negativity in the home
  • Courage — the inner strength to face a difficult phase, a court matter, a workplace conflict
  • Family wellbeing — particularly the health and marriage prospects of children
  • Purification — a monthly reset that keeps the household's spiritual atmosphere clean

Masik Durgashtami Puja Vidhi — Step by Step

1. Snan and Sankalp

Rise during Brahma Muhurat, bathe, and wear clean clothes — red, orange or yellow are preferred, as they carry the Devi's own colours. Stand before your altar, take water and a few grains of akshat in your right palm, and speak your sankalp aloud: your name, your gotra, the place, the tithi, and what you are observing the vrat for.

2. Prepare the Sthapana

Clean the puja space thoroughly. Spread a red cotton cloth on a wooden chowki and place the murti or framed image of Maa Durga at the centre, facing east or north. To the right, establish a copper kalash filled with clean water and a little Gangajal (₹59), its mouth ringed with mango leaves and topped with a whole coconut wrapped in red cloth.

3. Deep Prajwalan

Light a ghee lamp with pure desi ghee and a cotton batti. Many households keep an akhand jyoti burning from sunrise until the evening aarti on Ashtami. Light a dhoop or agarbatti alongside.

4. Shodashopachara Puja

Offer the sixteen upacharas in sequence — invocation, seat, water for the feet, bath, cloth, ornament, and so on. Practically, this means: apply roli/kumkum and chandan tilak to the Devi, offer akshat, red flowers (hibiscus is most beloved to Her), a red chunri (₹74), bangles and sindoor as saubhagya items (16 Shringar Kit, ₹179), then naivedya.

5. Naivedya and Path

Offer halwa, kheer, or coconut sweets along with panchmeva and fresh fruit. Then read the Durga Saptashati — or, if a full path is not possible, recite the Siddha Kunjika Stotram, the Devi Kavach, or simply chant the Navarna mantra:

ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे

6. Kanya Pujan

Where possible, invite young girls (aged 2 to 10) into the home, wash their feet, apply tilak, tie mauli on their wrists, feed them, and offer a small dakshina. On Ashtami this is considered the single most merit-bearing act of the day.

7. Aarti and Kshama Prarthana

Conclude with the Durga Aarti — Jai Ambe Gauri — performed with an aarti thali holding a lit diya and Bhimseni kapoor. Ring the bell, circle the flame clockwise, and finish by asking forgiveness for any error in the ritual.

🪔 Everything for your Durgashtami altar, in one order

Roli, akshat, chandan, mauli, desi ghee, batti, panchmeva, lal kapda, copper kalash and aarti thali — authentic, temple-grade samagri delivered across India, so nothing is missing on the morning of the vrat.

Fasting Rules for Masik Durgashtami

The vrat is flexible by design — the Devi asks for sincerity, not suffering. Choose the level your body and schedule allow:

Type of Vrat What It Involves
Nirjala No food or water until the puja and aarti are complete. For the healthy and experienced only.
Phalahar Fruit, milk, curd, and water through the day. The most commonly followed form.
Ek Bhukt One satvik meal after the evening puja — kuttu/singhara atta, sendha namak, sabudana, potato.

Avoid completely on this day: onion, garlic, meat, eggs, alcohol, ordinary table salt (use sendha namak), grains and pulses if fasting strictly. Equally important — avoid anger, harsh speech, gossip, and any disrespect towards women or girls in the household. On Devi's tithi, that last one carries real weight.

Break the fast (parana) after the evening aarti, ideally with the prasad you offered. A Vratam All-in-One Vrat Snacks Combo (₹349) is handy to keep aside for that parana plate. Elderly devotees, pregnant women, children and those on regular medication should observe the puja fully and keep the fast partially — this is expressly permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Masik Durgashtami the same as Navratri's Maha Ashtami?
No. Maha Ashtami falls once a year, during Shardiya Navratri in the month of Ashwin, and is the most powerful Durgashtami of all. Masik Durgashtami is the monthly observance of the same tithi — the vidhi is nearly identical, just simpler in scale.

Can I observe this vrat if I have never done it before?
Yes. There is no initiation requirement and no minimum number of months. Take a sankalp on the morning of the vrat, observe it sincerely, and continue for as many months as you wish. Many families commit to a year — twelve consecutive Durgashtamis — and then perform a small udyapan.

What if I cannot do the full puja because of work?
Light a ghee diya before Maa Durga in the morning, chant the Navarna mantra 108 times, keep a phalahar fast, and perform the aarti when you return home in the evening. A short, honest puja is worth more than an elaborate one done in a rush.

Which colour and flowers does Maa Durga prefer?
Red above all — red cloth, red chunri, red flowers. Hibiscus (gudhal) is Her most cherished flower, followed by red roses and marigold. Avoid offering aak, madar, and durva grass to the Devi.

Can women observe the vrat during their monthly cycle?
Traditional practice is to refrain from touching the altar and performing the ritual puja during those days. Mental worship, mantra japa, and reading the Devi stotras are always permitted, and many acharyas encourage exactly that. If Ashtami falls during your cycle, keep the sankalp and complete the physical puja the following month.

Should the akhand jyoti burn all night?
On Masik Durgashtami it is customary to keep the lamp lit from the morning puja until the evening aarti, not necessarily overnight. Only ensure it is never left unattended near cloth or paper.

Bring Her Protection Into Your Home

Masik Durgashtami is one of the gentlest doors into a serious spiritual discipline. One day a month. One lamp. One sankalp. Over a year, that rhythm quietly changes the atmosphere of a home — the arguments settle, the fear loosens, and something steady takes its place.

Whatever you are carrying into this Ashtami — an illness in the family, a stalled career, a matter that will not resolve — bring it to Her plainly. Durga does not ask you to be strong before you approach. She is the strength you approach for.

🕉️ Can't perform the puja yourself this Ashtami?

Our Vedic pandits perform a full Sankalp Puja in your name and gotra at the temple, and share the sankalp video and prasad details with you. Ideal if you are travelling, unwell, or living abroad.

🔱 For the Devi Path You Could Not Complete at Home

The full Durga Saptashati asks for hours most households simply do not have on a working Thursday. These two make the Ashtami path possible either way — one performed for you at the temple, one small enough to read in ten minutes at your own altar.

→ Navratri Durga Kavach & Chandi Path Puja — Saptashati path in your name & gotra (₹1100)
→ Wooden Durga Chalisa — for the monthly Ashtami paath at home (₹269)
