Why the confusion: 7 or 8 November, and why on Diwali day?

Most people expect Choti Diwali to fall a day before Diwali. In 2026 it does not, and the tithi timings explain why.

Chaturdashi runs from 10:47 AM on 7 November to 11:27 AM on 8 November. The main rite, Abhyang Snan, must be done before sunrise, at moonrise, while Chaturdashi prevails. That only happens on the morning of 8 November (5:41–6:38 AM).

Kali Chaudas (Gujarat) and Hanuman Puja use Chaturdashi at midnight, which falls on the night of 7 November. So some calendars show "Choti Diwali 7 Nov"; they are describing a different rule for a different rite.

Amavasya begins at 11:27 AM on 8 November and covers that evening’s Pradosh, so Diwali Lakshmi Puja is also on 8 November. Morning: Narak Chaturdashi snan. Evening: Lakshmi Puja. Same date, different rituals.

Recommended plan

Night of 7 Nov: Kali Chaudas or Hanuman puja if that is your tradition. 8 Nov, 5:41–6:38 AM: oil-ubtan bath (sesame oil), new clothes, a diya for Yama. 8 Nov evening: Diwali Lakshmi Puja (5:54–7:50 PM).

Abhyang Snan vidhi (short)

  1. Before dawn, apply sesame oil and ubtan (besan, haldi, chandan).
  2. Bathe; traditionally the apamarg twig is circled over the head three times.
  3. Wear clean or new clothes and offer water to Surya at sunrise.
  4. Light a deep for Yama and remember Krishna’s victory over Narakasura.

Choti Diwali 2026 FAQs

Is Choti Diwali 2026 on 7 or 8 November?

Narak Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) is on 8 November, because Chaturdashi prevails before sunrise only on that morning. Kali Chaudas, which follows the midnight rule, is on the night of 7 November.

Why are Choti Diwali and Diwali on the same day in 2026?

Chaturdashi is present at sunrise on 8 November and Amavasya is present at sunset the same day, so the morning bath and the evening Lakshmi Puja share one date.

What is the Abhyang Snan time in 2026?

5:41 AM to 6:38 AM IST on 8 November for New Delhi.

All times are IST for New Delhi (Drik Panchang). Sunrise, sunset and lagna differ by city, so check your local Panchang; follow your family or temple tradition where it differs.
